Selling Candles Online

October 5, 2011 - 8:51 am - Posted by admin

If you make candles for a living or as a hobby on the side for something to do, you should sell the candles on the web.  It is an excellent way to increase your income on the side and you just might find that you can make a living selling candles full time.  When selling candles online, there are a few things you need to consider to get started.  These things include the retail shop you build, building a customer base, and advertising your business.

If you want to sell candles online, the first thing that needs to be done is a website must be built.  You can usually hire someone to build a website for you.  However, it is best to build one yourself so you know how to make the necessary changes on a regular basis.  If you cannot make changes to your online store yourself then the cost of someone maintaining your site can get rather expensive quickly.  Your online e-store should provide pages regarding who you are and a little history about your business, pages displaying the different candles to buy, and a way for customers to make a purchase.  This means you will need to setup some sort of payment method with your bank or an online payment source.  If you want to accept credit cards, this can be an option too.  However, it is usually best not to accept credit cards until your business is busy enough and your sales are good.  This is because the costs of credit card transactions can be too expensive.

Building a customer base is another factor when starting an online candle store.  If you currently sell candles to your friends, they will become online customers.  It is best to bring in your current customers and build a network.  For example, an online store offering an immigrant help with USCIS US Visas will send their current people to their new website.  This will help generate traffic and help you build a foundation to get started.  Traffic will help your rank when candles are searched for in the search engines.  Building a customer base will take a lot of work by word of mouth, postal, and online methods.

Advertising is a big factor when it comes to building a candle business on the web.  There are many ways to advertise your online store.  Many of the ways you can advertise online include through blogs, email campaigns, strategically using keywords, and by writing articles.  You can even join networking sites and groups as a way to get the word out about your business.  The more advertising you do and chatting with others you perform helps you brand your business and build a name customers trust.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to starting your own e-candle store.  However, if you work hard and brand well, your side business could become a full time successful endeavor that you never thought could happen.  Always keep in mind your website, building a customer base, and practicing plenty of advertising techniques.

What Considerations Should You Make For Packaging of Soy Candles?

October 4, 2011 - 9:28 am - Posted by admin

Making and selling soy candles comes with some special considerations.  The wax may be soft enough to melt on warm days in some cases, so selling of these candles requires knowing not only where they can be safely placed in a shop, but how to protect them during shipping. The color may fade when exposed to direct sunlight as well. Keeping in mind these factors when preparing to package your handmade soy candles can ensure that both bulk shipping and customer packaging is protective enough to pad and protect the candle in transit.

One thing to keep in mind is that many paper boxes can crumple if they are mishandled.  Some of the cheaper boxes become even weaker of exposed to any moisture. Because of this you may want to have edge protectors for the cases and cardboard edge protectors either inside the box or around it.  Many times for soy candles you can find professional custom packaging solutions that will handle these details.

Because soy candles are made from a plant based renewable wax and have been proven to be healthier then some other waxes to burn, they are becoming very popular. They hold scents well, and are often made into container candles.  While the wax for this type of candle is very soft, it is also rather long burning.  Placing a candle of this type in a warm window may be enough to melt it and release scent it holds.  However, direct sunlight will fade the color, so care needs to be taken in this regard. Another issue is that warmed candles can form “frost” as they re-harden.  If this happens to bother you then you’ll need to take care that you buy wax that will not do this.  There are soy wax blends made so that the wax will not frost.

Some soy wax makers have made harder grads of wax that can be used for molded candles and for pillar candles.  The harder the wax is the higher the melting point for it. These types of candles may be burned inside containers or stand alone, as self supporting candles, but they also have special shipping requirements.  It is perhaps even more vital for a molded candle to stay cool and out of the sun then it is for a proper container candle.

When packaging these into boxes you will want to ensure that there are edge protectors to keep the corners from getting bashed, and cardboard edge protectors on the boxes themselves to ensure that they will not crumple.  One way to be positive that your handmade candles will survive the shipping is to invest in custom packaging solutions.

Soy candles are the wave of the future.  By protecting the candle in shipping to shops or to the consumer you can avoid costly returns because of broken or damaged candles. Remember that they need to be protected from direct light and high temperatures both while on display and during shipping to ensure that you are providing a high quality product.
