What Considerations Should You Make For Packaging of Soy Candles?

Making and selling soy candles comes with some special considerations.  The wax may be soft enough to melt on warm days in some cases, so selling of these candles requires knowing not only where they can be safely placed in a shop, but how to protect them during shipping. The color may fade when exposed to direct sunlight as well. Keeping in mind these factors when preparing to package your handmade soy candles can ensure that both bulk shipping and customer packaging is protective enough to pad and protect the candle in transit.

One thing to keep in mind is that many paper boxes can crumple if they are mishandled.  Some of the cheaper boxes become even weaker of exposed to any moisture. Because of this you may want to have edge protectors for the cases and cardboard edge protectors either inside the box or around it.  Many times for soy candles you can find professional custom packaging solutions that will handle these details.

Because soy candles are made from a plant based renewable wax and have been proven to be healthier then some other waxes to burn, they are becoming very popular. They hold scents well, and are often made into container candles.  While the wax for this type of candle is very soft, it is also rather long burning.  Placing a candle of this type in a warm window may be enough to melt it and release scent it holds.  However, direct sunlight will fade the color, so care needs to be taken in this regard. Another issue is that warmed candles can form “frost” as they re-harden.  If this happens to bother you then you’ll need to take care that you buy wax that will not do this.  There are soy wax blends made so that the wax will not frost.

Some soy wax makers have made harder grads of wax that can be used for molded candles and for pillar candles.  The harder the wax is the higher the melting point for it. These types of candles may be burned inside containers or stand alone, as self supporting candles, but they also have special shipping requirements.  It is perhaps even more vital for a molded candle to stay cool and out of the sun then it is for a proper container candle.

When packaging these into boxes you will want to ensure that there are edge protectors to keep the corners from getting bashed, and cardboard edge protectors on the boxes themselves to ensure that they will not crumple.  One way to be positive that your handmade candles will survive the shipping is to invest in custom packaging solutions.

Soy candles are the wave of the future.  By protecting the candle in shipping to shops or to the consumer you can avoid costly returns because of broken or damaged candles. Remember that they need to be protected from direct light and high temperatures both while on display and during shipping to ensure that you are providing a high quality product.
